In this country it seems like more and more people support public education, state funded universities, government run hospitals, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security.
All classic socialistic programs that have found their way into the American economy.
So are we becoming a socialist country?
The United States is hung up on the refusal that our economy includes some socialism aspects. There is no other country in the world so fixated on the refusal to acknowledge the inevitable mix of socialism and capitalism.
But it seems like we are heading more and more towards the socialism side then the capitalism side.
We keep trying to expand these socialistic programs. Our own government has bailed out Airline companies and Mortgage companies. Our government bailed out our entire Automobile industry.
Our government now has their hands in our professional and collegiate sports.
Our health care system is government run, even if no one will admit it. Our government has now told the people where they can and can't do certain things. Government has told business owners that they cannot allow smokers in their establishments. On top of that now government has now told the people they cannot smoke in open air public places such as parks and beaches. Infringing on individual rights.
If you were born after 1965 you have never had a choice but to be a part of these programs.
Socialism has never worked anywhere in the world. Look at Cuba they are trying to move towards more of a capitalistic society. For the first time they can buy and sell their own automobile and homes. So why is a country that has forever been socialistic leaning more towards capitalism? Because they know that they cannot afford all the services that they (the government) are trying to provide. Sounds like a country I know, can't afford all the programs/services we are trying to provide.
The Soviet Union crumbled under socialism. Even European countries are collapsing economically under socialism, look at Greece.
Yet here in America you turn on your tv or you read articles telling our citizens that adding more socialism will solve our economic problems.
If the cost of these programs is what is exploding our debt while causing huge deficits, is the solution really to create more social programs or even expand the ones that currently exist now.
After getting an education through a government funded school program, we may live long enough to collect a retirement income from the government. Our health care will be provided by and paid for by the government. Home owners and the real estate industry use the government subsidy called the mortgage deduction to get money back on their housing.
The majority of the population indeed does support public funding of education and health care. The same majority population opposes the privatization of Medicare , Medicaid and other entitlement programs.
Why? If will allow our government to control everything we have and do, that creates a very stale society and even staler economy. Big government is not the answer to our problems but by removing some of "big brothers" hands it will allow the private sector to succeed. One other major problem with having the government run so many things is that if money becomes short (like now) they can just raise taxes(like now) or print more money(which causes a weaker dollar value) or borrow more money(adding to the deficit to pay for programs the government cat afford).
So are we becoming a socialist country? We have always been somewhat of a socialist country but we must always try to lean to capitalism and free market and less government intervention.
Can a government that eats up a third or more of its economy and continues to infringe on individual liberties really succeed?
You tell me…Agree or disagree either way I learn what the PEOPLE think. L2

I am not sure if we are a pure socialist society but we sure do have some aspects of one. I believe in free market and competition because it creates better products and services. People always striving to be better then the next guy. Just my opinion.
@Anonymous thank you for you comment please visit us often. I can say with pretty strong assurance that the United States of America is made of socialistic and capitalistic views. That is what is so great about this country. You see in my opinion if a country is too socialistic it will stale and stall the economy. There will be not competition because the government will run it all. Plus there will be no over sight, in a socialistic society it is the government that decides where when and how much is needed. Politicians start taking care of the programs that they have interest/invested in. Too much Capitalism creates monopolies which is bad for business and growth. Capitalism is also said to create a very wealthy upper class and a very poor lower class, cutting out the middle class. So the real question in my opinion is not which one we are leaning to more but rather how do we find the happy median between the two?
right now more toward socialist, entitlements are exceeding all other facits of the budget, I believe its more than half, those on government assistance are a voting pool, politicians cannot cut or eliminate these programs for fear of losing the vote. dont get me wrong for a strong economy these programs are needed, but they were intended to help someone in time of need not create a life style, ppl on these programs will not get off because its a paycut to get a job, sit around and do nothing and have your rent, food, car payment, health care etc... paid for or work your butt off and not be able to afford any of it, vicious circle no end in sight untill entitlements run the country into the ground and the next great depression starts and we are all working breaking rocks again to dam near starve to death and live in a tent, under a current pres that never worked a day in his life and grew up in such an enviroment the future is bleek at best. Obama the pure admitted socialist... Good Luck to you
@Anonymous thank you for your comment. I agree that right now we are leaning towards the socialist side of the spectrum. I do disagree with you in that these programs weaken our economy not make them stronger. These programs eat up tax dollar after tax dollar. To expand or create new programs like those would do nothing but raise our taxes even more. We need to wean people off these programs and get them into the working class of America, where their tax dollars can then help someone else in need. You are right it cannot be a lifestyle it is aid.
