NFL and Money...

Well today's blog will consist of three things I love football, soccer and money.

Lately I've been hearing a lot of complaints against NFL players and this lockout we are currently in. Many have stated that it's the players fault for the lockout because they want a bigger cut of the owners profits. Owners and the NFL definitely do make a profit. Last year it was estimated at around 9 billion dollar profit. The league is certainly not struggling.

Now there are some that argue that the players do not need more money at this time. Owners will say that players make huge amounts of money and if they want more money they should wait until their contract is up. I don't have a big disagreement with them there. But let me point some things out about the NFL.

The average salary for an NFL players is estimated to be about 1.1 million dollars per year. Not bad right, that sounds like a slot of money. In reality it is. But let's do some comparisons. The average NBA player makes 5.2 million dollars a year. The average MLB player makes 3.25 million dollars a year. The average salary for a EPL soccer player is 2.3 million dollars a year. The average salary of a NHL player is 2.4 million dollars a year. Wow those numbers alone are astounding. For what most consider one of the most brutal sports in the world. Hard to argue considering all the head injuries, concussions and all the other joint injuries.

Here are some other interesting figures. Tha average career length for a NFL is 3.5 years. Well that is understandable due to the physicality of the sport. The average career length of a MLB player is 5.6 years. The average career length for a NBA player is about 4.7 years. The average career length for a NHL player is 5.5 years. Wow those numbers are a little interesting as well.

The NFL has the lowest average yearly salary as well as the lowest career length average. Yet e league in one of if not the most profitable sports in the world. Something doesn't add up there huh? For all money that is made it is the players that are getting short changed here. This doesn't even take into consideration the insurance and retirement problems within the NFL. So where does all that money go, well we have already answered that question haven't we. The owners and the league made 9 billion dollars in profit last year. That is where it going. So when a players asks for more money or tries to negotiate a new contract try to remember that he is well under-paid for the actual life of his career.

Please let me know what you think or feel about this topic or any of the sports I spoke...L2

One of the problem is media coverage. They are quick to print about the hundred million dollar contract but what about the third string DE who plays on kick off team only. But no one forces these players to play, so if you dont like 1.5million for three years use that college degree you were suppose to get and work somewhere else. Oh wait you left early for big money and didnt get degree then want to bitch about being under paid. Sorry dont feel sorry about want any professional in any career makes, you decided to take the job for that pay live with it. As for career being 3.5years for football even more reason to get that degree on that free ride in college you got at bfe college

@original Loose thank your for commenting make sure you sign up to follow and subscribe VIA email.....your right about media coverage and what they report...but we are talking about averages here. You are right no one forces anyone to work, but it like anything else if you out preform what you are worth are you wrong for asking more...As far as leaving early heck they are forced to leave forced to leave by the Mel Kipers that say if he doesn't leave now he will lose millions. As far as not feeling sorry for them try taking feelings out of it, if you had to take your pay and live with it in whatever line of you do would that change your mind?

If you at it fom a business standpoint and not from a fan standpoint then your post has all the answers in it.

If I am a business owner why would I pay more for something that doesn't last as long. Even furthur I can get that same product and even a potentially better product for less money.

That being said, there is some common sense that has to go into this because we are talking about human beings a sthe product.

The retirement thing is the biggest thing for me. Those players need to be taken care of just like any other job.

Also, I would like to point out that the roster size drives down averages. I bet if you ran those same numbers again for average starter's salaries in each sport, the numbers would be a lot closer. Then run the average of the top 5 on each team per sport.

For example in 2009 the New Orlean's Saints payroll was $89,658,500. The top 5 made over $37 million, where as in basketball you have 12 people sharing what 52 share ion football.

@Drunkin Sailor thank you for being a loyal follower and contributor...I will run those numbers and see what I come up with..so you are saying that the NFL numbers are scued because of a few players make the most money and roster sizes? What do others think?

I think the most important thing is to set up an insurance program for these guys. Some of them are 30 years old and can't get any insurance.I like all of the facts/info that was put out there.

@ACE KILLJOY thank you for your comment and please sign up to follow us via email for the latest updates...I agree for a league that make billions of dollars in profits every year off of the bodies of these young men, it would be only right that provide some sort of insurance for them. Getting insurance for those guys with all of their pre-existing conditions is probably impossible..If you make money off of someone's blood sweat and tears at least provide them a way to fix or replace the blood sweat and tears right?

@Drunkin Sailor I ran some numbers and here is what I came up with...In the NFL the top 10 players on a team earn about 50% or more of that teams salary cap. The next 15 top players earn about 25% of the teams salary cap. That means the top 25 players on an NFL team roster make up about 75% of the teams salary cap. That leaves 25% of the salary cap to be spent on the remaining 28 players on the roster. So yes the numbers I provided earlier are scued alittle but that is evem more reason for the players to get a bigger piece of the pie. It will benefit those remaining 28 players on each team in the long run..

10-4 Those numbers are enogh to make a person sick. The bottom 28 are the one's with the real problems.Alot of thouse player's have to be 300 plus in wieght just to stay on the team.

I like what y'all have going on here I would like to see a topic on HIGH SCHOOL FUNDING,in relation to sports and teacher cut backs. In a time where the U.S.A. has thousands of students that come from other countries to be educated in our collage programs and high school exchange programs. Then go back home and take U.S. jobs home with them F-THAT.If our kid's stay "DUBM" cause we want to go to a football game on friday,is that not a direct reflection of our own priorities.I don't wont to see sports leave high school I was in sports but not at my kid's and country's expence.

@ACE KILLJOY thank again for your comments....I will work on a discussion for HIGHSCHOOL SPORTS AND EDUCATIONS and have it posted in the next day or two...so get ready and spread the word about our site. L2

I only meant the top 5 as a comparison between sports. For example take the saaries of the top 5
Dallas Cowboys 41 mil
Mavericks 57 mil
Rangers 52 mil
Stars 23 mil

Football has 53 man rosters whihc is more than double any other roster, that drives the average salary number down. but when you look at the top 5 it's closer.

@DRUNKIN SAILOR great info there..the top five are alot closer then i thought they would be..but i still notice that of the NFL NHL NBA and MLB teams you listed the NFL team (one that I hold dear to my heart) is the second lowest just in front of the NHL team..It really is interesting that a league that is so profitable does not play its players as so...Just my opinion, but it matters.
