Texas colleges and hand guns cont...

So as I have been reading comments and talking to many people about this topic I decided it needed one more day. A day of maybe some facts. One of the biggest arguments for this bill is that a person has the "right to bear arms". I assume they are referring to the Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights. Well I am not historian but here is alittle history people. The Constitution was written in the year 1787, the Second Amendment was not adopted until 1791. The Bill of Rights as we know them were based upon the English Bill of Rights. The English wrote this Bill to give them protection from a unlawful King (I believe it was James II). So when we settled here and were adopting our own Constitution and Bill of Rights the only thing we had to base it upon was what they had in England. Our early American settlers viewed the "right to bear arms" as important for one or more of the following reasons: 1) deterring undemocratic government 2) repelling invasion 3) suppressing insurrection 4) a natural right to self defense (remember this one people it will come up again) 5) participating in law enforcement 6) enabling/organizing a militia. Those were the reasons the Second Amendment was written into our Constitution. The Constitution has not changed much since it was written in 1787. Now come to present day, we do not have a undemocratic government, we are not repelling an invasion, we are not suppressing a insurrection and we are not organizing a militia. So that leaves was with the right to self defense and participating in law enforcement. The law enforcement is understood I will leave that one alone as it is self explanatory. The right to self defense, ah the big phrase everyone wants to use. In 2008 and 2010 our own government stated that the Second Amendment protects individuals right to possess firearms unconnected to service a militia/military to use in TRADITIONAL LAWFUL purpose of self defense such as DEFENSE WITHIN ONES HOME. That is what our government stated folks I didnt make that up.( District of Columbia vs. Heller.) So now with that being said we just want to give every John/Jane with a CHL the ability to use their weapon in a very non-traditional way. Sounds alittle crazy to me. There is a Senator Jeff Wentwoth whose sole reasoning for wanting this bill to pass is because he does not want to see another Va Tech incident. Well hello guy no one does. But by adding more guns to the battle doesnt always win the war now does it. Ok a few more stats here: College and Universities have high rates of alcohol abuse, higher rates of depression, higher rates of stress of young adults, not to mention the romantic entanglements that many college students must deal with. Now the average age of a college student is between the age of 18 and 23. My friends these are not the people we need walking around our campuses packing heat while they are trying to deal with all the problems that I had just mentioned. One more quick note here this bill only affects state funded institutions so private colleges and universities will have the option to not allow concealed hand guns on their campuses. Why you ask? Because they are considered a business and state law give a "business" the right to whether they want guns in their establishments or not. Well lets be honest here there aren't too many of us that dont know that even state funded universities and colleges are "BIG" businesses. So why not let them have the same option?..Please let me know what you think, we may not agree on the issue but I am opened minded and I agree that we can disagree..Next Post coming soon...L2
