A bit long but worth the read....
After almost a decade of grinding, we are making progress. After years of some of the worse staffing shortages, we are making progress.
Together, department and union, we made this progress. It was not always smooth and easy but progress has been made. We did not do this separately, we cannot do this separately. We are clearing the way to become one of the best departments around!
But there are still unfinished tasks. Tasks that if not completed, will send us back to the days of low morale and high turnover. These tasks must be done jointly, by labor and management working together to accomplish these tasks.
It is our unfinished task to restore the trust of our members. To make sure our union and its leaders represent the majority and not just the vocal minority. To make sure our union is up to date with all issues by making scheduled visits to it's members.
It is our unfinished task to restore our relationship with admin and city leaders. The power of this union lies in the influence we are able to create. With disenchanted relationships people will shake our hands and then turn around and vote against us. We have seen this too many times!
It is our unfinished task to promote our department as a whole. We must get involved with PSAs, schools (from elementary to high school), businesses, and we must educate them. We must become involved in even more charity work and we must promote the Corpus Christi Fire Department when doing so. When the citizens see us out in public they see Corpus Christi Firefighters, not local members, So let's promote what they see!
It is our unfinished task to protect our contract and everything in it. Our contract is our Holy Grail, if it is violated we will bring thunder and lightning down to protect it and its members. With that being said, if someone is wrong we will tell them they are wrong. Personal accountability starts at the top and we must push for consistency across the board!
Members do not expect our union to solve every problem. They do not expect us to agree on every issue. BUT they do expect for us to have their best interest at heart. They do expect us to be able to compromise when possible and it is the best for the whole. They understand that the Fire Service is changing right now in front of our eyes and we must change with it. We ALL must understand that the responsibility of improving this union and this department remains a unfinished task OF US ALL!
Make sure you go vote and help complete these unfinished tasks. GET INFORMED, GET INVOLVED, AND SPEAK UP! WE ARE LISTENING...
