With the first Cowboys pre season football game now in the books, we will look back and discuss what we learned from last nights game.
First thing we learned is that the first team offense with a healthy Tony Romo will be just fine in moving the football. We also noticed last night that this years Cowboys may still have the same problem they have had for some years now. That is not being able to score touchdowns in the redzone, instead they settle for field goals. This will hurt them in the regular season if they can not figure out a way to get the ball in the end zone.
The next thing we noticed is that Dallas's defense will need to improve quickly if they want to contend for the NFC East title. Denver's first team moved the ball on them fairly easy. Rob Ryan will make this a beast of a defense, it is just a matter of long that will take. It needs to happen quickly, they have all the talent to be a top 5 defense.
Let's look at a few players individually. Harris should make the team if he continues to play like he did last night. The kid is way fast and has good hands. The catch he made at the end of the game was a good one. His 76 catch and run play for a touchdown showed is pull away speed, something the Cowboys could use. Tyron Smith the 6'5 300 offense lineman that is only 20 years old, plays with maturity beyond his years. He will be a good one in the years to come. Plus the kid has 37 inch arms, massive.
The rb Tanner ran for good yardage last night. Granted most of it came against 2nd and 3rd string players but he still put up good numbers. There may not be room for him on this squad but some team will pick him up. Receiver Radway has springer speed as well but runs bad routes and his hands are not reliable. Defensively Brian Mcann look good in the secondary. So did Abram Elam, so maybe the Cowboys secondary issues have been solved. Linebackers looked good all around.
Let's talk backup qbs. With history on our side, we know Romo will get injuried this year and a back up will have to start a few games. The Cowboys backup qbs are Kitna and Mcgee. We here believe this was one area the Cowboys should of improved on. Look at Kitna, he has only had one winning season in his entire career. Not the guy to help the Cowboys to the promise land. Then there is Stephen Mcgee. He looked ok at the end of the game, but Mcgee was an option qb in college. He looks more comfortable on boot legs and scrambles then when he has to sit in the pocket. Just watch his feet. When he got good protection last night and had time to throw, he got happy feet, dancing in place not knowing what to do in the pocket. Cut him and pick up a good reliable veteran. At the same time let Kitna go as well.
We learned alittle bit about Coach Garrett last night as well. He went for 2 and the win last night when he could have kicked the field goal and played for overtime. But Coach Garrett wants to instill a winning attitude in this team early on in this season and we think he did that. We also realize that this may be his last year as Dallas's head coach. Jerry Jones brought Rob Ryan in for 2 reasons. One was to improve a struggling defense. The second was to take over the head coaching job if Garrett can not get it down. Jerry is a brilliant business man for sure.
So did we learn anything of importance from last nights game. Not really, but now we have a few key players to watch for in the up coming games. Plus let's see if the defense quickly picks up and improves on Coach Ryans defense. Will the o line keep Romo safe? Let's keep watching and learning.
What did you think of last nights game?
