Texas colleges and guns

Yesterday the Texas senate passed legislation that will allow concealed hand guns to be carried on Texas college campuses. The carrier must have obtained his/her concealed hand gun license of course. This has raised many concerns state wide including here locally in Corpus Christi. Del Mar College has sent a letter to the senate asking them not to pass the bill. Now the questions will be is it someone's right to carry arms? Is safer to have a bunch of licensed gun carriers walking around campuses? Here is my take...I am all for the right to own guns, I personally own a few. I am all for protecting yourself your family and your property. What I am not for is weapons being carried at educational institutions whether they are being carried legal or illegally. People will argue that guns will show up on campuses by the "bad guys" and that is probably true. Their argument will be "dont you want to be able to defend yourself or give yourself a fighting chance" if you come across one of those "bad guys" with a gun. People bullets dont know if you are bad or good, they dont know if you are an innocent bystander just trying to go home to your family. Bullets dont discriminate. I personally have quite a few family members that attend Del Mar College and I can assure you that they will not be carrying any guns legally. I can also assure you that they do not feel safer walking around the campus knowing that other students may have be carrying a loaded hand gun legally. First off if a situation were to happen were some ill minded person were to pull a gun and start shooting students, the last thing we want is 5 or 6 other people pulling out their guns and firing. That is just ridiculous, this is not the wild west. Not to mention that the people shooting these guns, whether "good guys or bad guys", are probably horrible marksman. The best case scenario there is maybe the "bad guy" gets taken out along with many innocent people along the way. These situations are what our law enforcement are trained to deal with. Do really think that a law enforcement officer wants to pull up on scene and see multiple people with guns in hand. Trust me they dont. I read a comment earlier today that law enforcement officers are trained to deal with this situation by saying "put your weapons down". The person writing the comment stated that all the "good guys" would put down their guns and only the "bad guys" would continue to hold on to their weapons. That is one of the most ridiculous arguments I have ever heard. These college campuses are suppose to be for education not a place to be playing the Lone Ranger. Most of the people that argue that carrying a legal concealed weapon gives them a better chance of survival have probably never have been shot at or had to shoot at someone. It aint as easy as it sounds people. Now dont think I am an idiot thinking that guns wont show up on college campuses because I know they will. The answer is not to add more guns carried by people that took a ONE day course and received a certificate saying they can carry one. Think about this situation. You are leaving class walking to your vehicle. Approximately 50 yds away a gun fight breaks out. The guy/girl next to you just received her concealed hand gun license and just happens to be packing. He/she pulls their weapon and decides to "help out". The "bad guy" see this and starts shooting in your direction. Not a situation I would ever want to be in but I promise that is what would happen if this legislature passes. I am not against concealed hand guns being carried legally I just feel that they dont belong on college campuses. You wont see them in City Hall or the County Court House. Why? Because they dont want to add to the problem..I would like to hear views both ways today. Next post coming soon....

I posted something about this last night and I agree completely with you. Bill of rights, fine, carry a weapon and protect your family, IF you choose... but I will be damned if I continue my education somewhere that guns are allowed & like you said by someone who took a one day class. And how rare are the freak incidents that do happen at a college... If its my time to go then let me go but I dont need they person next to me to be adding to the problem and more people getting injured and dying... I think this whole thing is just ridiculous!

If they pass this law and it looks they will...they should allow the university/college decide whether or not they want kids because that is what they are kids walking around their campuses with loaded guns....I guarantee they will say no...Once again it is big government telling what we can and can't do

You can't even take a concealed hand gun into a local corner store. Why the heck would you be allowed to take a gun into a classroom

It's up to the establishment to allow concealed weapons on the premisis. If that law is passed, I would imagine all state campuses would come under the law but private campuses would still have the right to say no like any other private establishment.

@Drunken Sailor first thank you for commenting please become a follower..Next is with that being said it would mean any institution with Texas in its name or receives state funding correct? That would be a lot...Even though these are so called "state schools" we both know they are big "businesses"...How would you feel if this law was put in place at LSU? L2

FYI, the average age of college students is 18-23. Do we really want kids (most not even the legal age to drink) to carry weapons on campus? And not to mention school functions: athletic events, frat parties, etc.

@Deanna thank you for your comment...as you are a mother of a child that will entering college within the next 4 to 5 yrs. I am sure this is a concern for you as it should...I can tell from your comment that having more guns on college campuses and in college classrooms does not make you feel safer for your child...and in my opinion rightfully so...my new blog today will reveal some interesting facts so make sure you check back often....L2
